Baby Proof?

Alexa has gotten to the age where she REALLY likes to open kitchen cabinets doors and play under the counter.  That means that we need to get locks of some sort.  The thing is, I don’t want to lock all the doors up.  I want her to have some free play space in the kitchen.  I love the idea of her in there banging on bowls and cups while I cook or clean.

So instead of locking everything up, I decided to clear out a whole cabinet for her.  There’s really only one lower cabinet that would work.  For how big our kitchen is, we’re sadly lacking in large item storage space.  It took a big of fiddling around to figure out where all the big (non-baby-safe) Items would fit.  Granted, I don’t use most of these things often at all…so I didn’t have to find convenient new homes.  I did, however, manage to keep everything there in the room.

After clearing the cabinet out I filled it up with all the plastic stuff I could find.  Lots of random mugs, baby plates, reusable shopping bags, etc.  She LOVES it!  Now that she has a space all her own, it’s much easier to distract her when I have to be in there.

Still, I need to decide on locks.  Hmmmm, any suggestions?  Lusting over these magnetic ones :-)

Moving Rooms

After being featured on Zoey’s blog, Good Goog, I decided it was time to take a little of my own advice.  One piece of advice to her readers was to find a natural home for your belongings.  (ex: If you have a place where you always find yourself opening your mail, well then create a station there.  I tend to bring mine to the kitchen and open it over the garbage.  HAHA, with most paper mail, you’ll find that the trash can is its best home :-) )

I have a confession, I have a problem with baby toys.  While I’m sure most of you can sympathize, it was driving me mad.  We have a playroom, but it was almost never used.  It happened to be a room that’s supposed to be a dining room.  It’s between the front living room, and the kitchen.  It’s a room I have to walk through many many times a day.  We had gutted a built in hutch and made it into a built in shelving unit.  This was for toys!  I bought bins and baskets for sorting said toys.  I put bigger ones on the lower shelves so the babe could reach and play.  Her mp3 docking station is in there so we can turn on the music and watch her groove out.  There’s a small TV hooked to our home server if we should want to share cartoons with her (she doesn’t care a hoot about shows, which is OK by me, but weird..no?)  I even have space for crafting supplies for when she’s old enough to particiapate!

The problem was, we didn’t use it.  There was still a dining table in the room that was NEVER used for meals.  It had become a landing spot for mail (when I was too lazy to bring it the extra 10 feet to the kitchen?)  We also used it to keep random junk up off the floor away from Alexa.  So really, I had a big place for trash!  GAH

There was also very little seating in the room.  I had moved my rocker down from the nursery and put it next to her little book shelf, but that was it.  A rocker and an ottoman.  Not very conducive to hanging out and playing.  Weird thing, we had too much seating in the living room.  There was a HUGE sectional (the U-shaped kind) that fit well in the room, but felt overwhelming since it took up a good portion of the space.  Also, since all the good seating was in there, her toys almost always wandered in to join in on the fun :P

You see my problem now?  We have this dedicated space for all of the babe’s toy lovin’ fun, but all her stuff was in…what should be…a “grown-up” type space.  While I’m not a fan of the “forbidden” room, I would still prefer that the first room you walk into when you enter the house not be filled with baby blocks, stuffed animals, and other odds and ends.  I feel better when things are nice and tidy, and this arrangement was NOT making me feel calm!

This weekend, while the boy was away with the babe, I decided to get down to business.  I wanted ALL of the toys back in the playroom!  I wanted my living room to be back in order (btw, we were having new windows installed, and hated the idea of the couch covering ALL of the pretty new glass).  I had about 2 hours to get it all done.  I broke apart the couch, and now the love seat and chaise lounge are taking up an empty corner of the once bare playroom.  The main part of the couch (the 3 seater side) stayed put.  The rocker and ottoman is in the living room corner.  All the toys have a space.  My useless dinging table will be either sold on Craigslist or left out for the local garbage pickers :-)

It’s been 3 full days now, and we’ve used the playroom all day every day!  We may put the big TV back in here so Peter and I can stay in here at night and watch our shows after Alexa goes to bed, hmmmm something to think about.  I’m just so thrilled that the toys have a real home :-)

Guest Post – Good Goog Interview

Today my wonderful bloggy friend Zoey @ Good Goog was so kind to interview me about personal organization before and after Alexa was born.  Wow have I changed :-)

Go read all about my past as a professional organizer and how that translated into taking care of a baby.  Oh, and get a few tips on how to start some of your own organizational endeavors :-)

After you’re done, follow her on Twitter…she’s as good in real time as she is on her blog!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I make small attempts to be “green”, but most of my “recycling” is done more to save money, than to save the planet.

There are many baby related items that lose their purpose pretty early on in the game.  I try to re-purpose as much as possible…specially if it’s something that I’ve opened that I cannot donate or sell.

Here’s a list of the ways I’ve stretched the use of some baby stuff:

Nursing pads – I never had a milk surplus, so I didn’t need pads to soak up any leaks.  I did, however, have super sore nips after many LONG pumping sessions in the beginning.  Using the pads in my bra helped cut down on any friction, and also kept my bra clean after using creams to soothe the poor babies.  I then got a chance, heh, to use them again when the babe gave me a nasty case of thrush and I thought my boobs might fall off!  I’m hanging on to them for a while longer just in case it happens again…but after, almost 15 months of pumping/nursing, I hope to be done soon.

Lanolin Cream – I barely made a dent in the tube I bought for bf’ing.  I was all set up to have horrible issues with latch (ie: blister, tears, bleeding).  Luckily we skipped that part (I’m sure because he had to use shields for the first few months).  So I was left with this full tube of super thick and greasy cream.  You know what it’s amazing for?  Lip balm!  I use it every single night after I brush my teeth before heading to bed.  Makes for lovely soft lips in the morning.  I use a little in the morning too.  No smell, no taste, no more peely lips :-)

Boppy Pillow – We still use this from time to time for nursing sessions.  Specially at night when Alexa is falling asleep and wants to lay in my lap to drift off.  She’s much too squirmy during the day though to bother.  For a while we were using it for tummy time, or to prop behind her while she was learning to sit.  Now it plays double duty as padding below the coffee table.  Our table is round and has sharp little metal feet that come off the middle post.  While it’s more of a side table these days (more space in the middle of the room with it off to the side), but she still tends to play near it.  I didn’t want her to smash her face, so the Boppy lays over the feet to keep things safe.

Baby Clothes – Alexa is a skinny baby, so she tends to outgrow her clothes only in length.  She still has some things from her first few months that fit, how crazy is that!  Well to make the most of her old clothes that were barely used last summer (honestly, how many dresses does a baby need…you know they spend most of their time in jammies and onsies right?)  Now these dresses that were knee length are adorable little baby doll shirts!  They fit perfectly and cut down on the amount of new clothes I had to buy.  Though…she’s still in the stage where everyone wants to buy her cute stuff…so we, again, have too much!  Hopefully next summer we can do the same thing with the new stuff :-)  Also, I try to buy things a little bigger than needed so she gets maximum usage out of her clothes.  The only thing that makes this hard is pants.  She’s too thin to fit in most jeans and “dressy” pants that fit her in length.  Hoping she’s truer to size come fall when long pants will be necessary again.

Maternity Clothes – Here’s where I out myself.  I’ve had almost no luck losing the baby weight.  SOOOOOOOOOO like none of my pre-preg clothes fit me.  I have been wearing one pair of maternity jeans ALL year long.  They’re the only ones that don’t give me a muffin top!  HAHA.  I also wore a few maternity dresses over the winter because I really liked them :-)  I have, however, sold all but one maternity clothing item (those precious jeans, haha).  Hoping that FINALLY going back to the gym this summer will cut out the need, but I still have my backup :P

Now I turn to you, what uses did you find for old baby stuff?  I love to sell stuff, but sometimes I get the urge to hang on to Alexa’s things (just in case I ever decide to do it again).  Give me a good reason to keep some more!

Sew Sew Bad

I want to sew, I want to be crafty.  So this weekend…I’m ripping the office apart again.  I have a huge huge desk that I NEVER EVER use because I’m on a laptop that lives on my…lap!  I keep it downstairs so I can sit on the couch and veg with my bloggy friends.

Now that I’m not working from home I don’t need a huge workspace dedicated to printers and staplers and post-its.  What I do need is a place for me to create some of the awesome ideas I keep starring to save for later in my Google Reader :-)

Peter keeps the office sooooo messy I almost never even go into the room.  It needs to be cleaned and sorta baby proofed anyway since Alexa does go in there from time to time.  You see, Peter builds computers as a hobby…so we have boxes and bins and buckets of random computer parts.  It’s maddening because he keeps the ALL out whenever he’s got a project open.  He always has an open project!

Watch out for before and after pictures.  I want a nice space to set my stuff up asap!

Do you have any tips for me on what works for you in your craft space?  We have a large shelving unit where I can store my supplies (there’s also a small closet).  I’m happy to hang things on the wall.  Please do share :-)

Trippin’

We’re going on our very first family vacation this April. The plan is to visit Austin to test it out and see if we would like to live there. So while this trip will be fun fun fun (cannot wait to meet my friends IRL!!!), this will also be a bit of work. Work…above and beyond the normal work of vacationing with a baby :P

Sooooo we plan! What to do in the city that is family friendly so we can:
1. Have fun
2. Keep Alexa entertained
3. See if these kinds of outings are the kind we would want to do in the city we live in

Unlike the way I usually plan vacations, I’m trying not to be toooo crazy OCD and plan out every day. I just want to have a feel for the things that are available. So I turned to Facebook (there’s a FB fan page for just about anything), Yelp, and my Austin friends!

Aside from planning the meat of the trip, there’s planning the transportation portion.  Alexa will be riding on my lap on the plane and we’ll be renting a carseat with the car in Austin.  But how the hell were we supposed to get her to the airport?  This would be nothing if we were getting dropped off and picked up, but we’re not.  We could park at the airport, but then we would need a carseat to use the shuttle service from the lot (one they do not provide…ummmm, so NOT lugging her carseat on the plane with us).  We could take the train from here, but then who is going to pick us up at like 11pm when we get back?

Soooooooo we’re driving up to Newark to Peter’s office, parking there…then taking the train from there.  Ugh, but the best way to avoid the need for a carseat or help from anyone.  It’s amazing the things you never consider until there’s a baby to work around :-)

Now, packing?  How does one pack for an infant?  Guess that means I’ll bring everything she owns, ha!  And food?  STOP STRESSING…you’re not leaving the country Amber…they have grocery stores in TX.  So we’ll pack a carryon food/diaper bag (allowed by the TSA and the airline, does not count against the number of carryons you can have, yippy).  Lots of num nums for Alexa to keep her happy.  Oh, and nurisng will come in handy…so there’s that.

We do still need to figure out what to pack for clothes, toys, books, etc…but like I said before, we’re not visiting a foreign land.  If we forget or need something, there are stores.  Same is true for Peter’s and my stuff.  You can always buy new…hell, that’s a good enough reason for shopping if there ever was one!

I’m really hoping she’s ok with the plane ride.  It’s a fairly long trip with a layover.  **fingers crossed**  I think I’m more worried about the dirty looks from the other passengers as we board and OMG if she flips out.

We still have to find out if the hotel will supply a pack-n-play, though she’s used to sleeping with us so really we don’t HAVE to have one.  Though…it would be nice since she’s FINALLY learning to sleep in her crib.  Oh, and what if we want to hire an in-room sitter?  Will the hotel provide this service?  Some websites say that ours does, but I can’t find a reference on the main hotel website.  One of those things you need to call for…and, ya know…talk to a real person.  There’s always this company.  I’m sooo NOT sure that we would even bother to use this type of service, but it’s nice to know that they’re out there.  Though…since I’m weird about leaving Alexa with family…I’m most likely going to be freaked about leaving her with a complete stranger :-)

Wow, there are just lists and lists of things to research and get done.  Maybe this is why we never flew anywhere or stayed in a hotel when I was younger.  Travel is WORK!  Our family vacations (if you can even call them that) were usually to go see other family across the country.  Nothing like a 20 hour car trip to make you hate each other.

Purging

Today was the day. The day that I FINALLY got things in order to sell sell sell! I’m participating in a local consignment sale for baby items. I am NOT saving them. For one, I’m done having babies. For two, I cannot stand to keep stuff we’re not using.

It’s been a pretty big undertaking, as we have EVERYTHING Alexa has worn, owned, used since day one. I would have sold things last fall, but learned of the sale while it was going on, too late to join in. I’ve since been collecting things she’s outgrown, or doesn’t like to play with, for months now. The pile got pretty big and has been mocking me.

Tonight I broke down and took the few hours I needed to log everything into their online tagging system. It’s super easy to use, just takes time…something I don’t always have much of! Well, almost everything has been entered. If everything we sell is actually purchased, we’ll make upwards of $500 or more! Sweet! And an even sweeter part of the deal is that I get to shop again. I love me some gently used baby swag :-)

I still have to get supplies to prepare the items for sale. Everything has to be hung on wire hanger, GASP, tagged, and then dropped off for inspection. Which reminds me, I still need to decide on a dropoff time and sign up! Next Sunday I suppose. I cannot, repeat CANNOT wait to get all this STUFF out of my house!

You see, I’m a firm believer in “If you don’t need it, love it, use it…then don’t keep it”. There are so many ways to part with your belongings that don’t feel like you’re just throwing them away. Sell them on Ebay (or consignment) and make back some of that hard earned cash you spent, or hell, have a yard sale! Donate your things to a friend or to charity. You can hold your own topic specific swap meetup with friends! If you haven’t used the item, feel free to regift it (just try not to give it back to the person who gifted it to you, HA). If all else fails, sometimes you have to let go and just deal with the fact that some things are indeed trash (will you ever REALLY get those shoes fixed, that sweater sewn, that stain removed?).

What are you planning on parting with?  Do you enjoy purging or does it make you feel queasy?

Wannabe

Confession time…I’m a total wannabe! I want to be that crafty mom, that baking mom, that pulled together fun mom…feeding kids healthy snacks and having the house everyone wants to hang out at.

As it stands now I’m just a faker. I have a sewing machine still in it’s box hiding lonely in the closet. I have tons of new piping supplies still waiting to be mated with a cake. There’s a collection of jars and magazines just waiting to be filled up and torn into.

Right now I’m trying to just collect things so that when the mood strikes the supplies are here. I guess that’s where this fits with organizing. If everything is is nicely sorted out and within arms reach I’ll be more likely to use it :-)

Re-zoned

There are a few things that I’ve done since my baby was born to help keep things orderly, to make my mommy-ing easier, and really…to let me be as lazy as possible in some respects. A good system to create LESS work for you…not more. If it creates more work, you’re less likely to use it…defeating the purpose, and tacking on more guilt.

What I’ve done throughout the house is set up zones, hot-spots, activity centers…whatever you want to call them. I’m sure I’ll miss a few, but here’s a list so you get the idea.

  • Bathing – Since our bathroom is crazy small, we keep all of the baby’s bath related items in her closet. The tub sits on the shelf when it’s not in use. The bottles of shampoo, conditioner, etc are in the cubies of an unused shoe organizer. The towels and cloths are in the same organizer. When she used to get sponge baths in the first weeks we kept all of that stuff in the top drawer of her changing table/dresser, but once she moved on to the tub this worked best. Everything is easily accessible and easy to put away when done!
  • Pumping – When we were still dealing with the NICU I pumped ALLLL the time. I had a hospital grade rental pump that took up a lot of room. We moved the “rocker” into our bedroom and put a plastic drawer unit next to it. I kept all my supplements, pads, creams in one drawer, extra pump parts in another, and other odds and ends in the last. This gave me a place to keep the remote, food, drink so I could get comfy and be entertained during those 45 minute sessions…ugggh!
  • Breastfeeding – In the beginning I nursed in our bedroom. It was still cold out, so it was easier to snuggle up in the bedroom, so I basically switched out the pumping supplies for the bf’ing supplies (a lot of the same). Now we nurse wherever, but in the beginning it was essential to have all my stuff at an arms reach!
  • Diaper changing – There are a few of these throughout the house. The main one being in the living room. We cloth diaper and they take up a lot of room, so we turned the TV table into a diaper changing dresser. There we house, within 2 drawers, all the cloth diapers and a few disposables, creams, wipes, changing pad. That way I don’t have to climb the stairs when, honestly, we spend most of our time on the living room floor.
  • Feeding – Now that the baby is on solids we’ve started to dedicate portions of the kitchen cabinets to her food and supplies. There’s one side of an upper cabinet that holds all her bottles and food related items. We also use this cabinet to contain all of her medications and tooth brushing needs (much easier to remember to do it right after her last meal/bottle). I do still make some of her food purees, so some stuff is in the fridge/freezer, but keeping the bulk of her meal supplies together makes preparing meals much easier when you’ve slept like shit the night before :-)
  • Play area – our dining room is a very underused waste of a space really, so we’ve dedicated half of it to use as a playroom. There’s a pretty rug on the floor for her to crawl on, the rocker has been moved down there now to be used for reading time, a sling bookcase was purchased to hold all age appropriate books so she can reach them and chow down HA. Also, we gutted an old built-in china cabinet and added shelving to house toy bins, craft supplies, and a TV (power and cable were ran so no extension cords have to be strung through the room). I hope to have some signs made up to attach to the bins and other storage containers so the baby can help put things away…when she’s no longer a baby :-)

As you can see…over the past year our needs have changed, and so have my systems. The thing that has stayed the same is that I try to keep it as simple as possible. Keeping like with like makes doing the task faster and easier. Being able to find what you need…when you need it…is the most basic and important thing when it comes to being “organized”!

Intro to Goals

So here I am, completely and utterly disorganized. A shell of my former Type-A self.

There are toys everywhere (though I’m working on a system so as Alexa grows she’ll be able to help put them away). There are dust bunnies hiding out in those long forgotten corners that I just don’t have time to clean. My kitties claws haven’t been trimmed if FOREVER. And don’t even talk to me about showering :P

The time has come for me to get my ish back in order.  I’ve had 12 months doing the “new mom”  thing, and now it’s just getting ridiculous.  I have friends who cook 4 course meals while taking care of twins…I can at least pay a bill on time right?!?

My goals are:

  • To shower *hopefully* every other day
  • Get a new bill/mail system so that I don’t missplace anything that’s in need of paying (most of my bills are paperless now, so those have been taken care of pretty well, the paper screws me up)
  • Start some meal planning so food doesn’t go bad or stay frozen the day I need it
  • Clean the house on a regular schedule so I don’t have a mad dash to clean the whole place at once

There will be more goals as time progresses and I start to get back into the swing of things, but these are the main things that are driving me batty right now. While I won’t need to give you details of how I clean myself or my house, I will be writing up the details when I come up with (and implement) a new system :-)
